New City Complex for EUR 2 B to Be Constructed in Downtown Sofia 2008-08-09 19:34 News from Novinite.com
The Bulgarian government has started a tender to select an architectural project for the construction of a new city complex for EUR 2 B in downtown Sofia.
The multifunction complex will be located at the so called 4th kilometer of the Tsarigradsko Shose Blvd on a plot of 600 decares, which are presently occupied by army barracks and offices, the Bulgarian newspaper 24 Chasa Daily reported Saturday citing a recent publication in the State Gazette.
Architect Mityo Videlov from Bulgaria`s Ministry of Regional Development and Public Works, who is in charge of organizing the tender, said the construction of the new city would start in two years.
The decision to demolish the buildings of the General Staff of Bulgaria`s former First Army was motivated by government`s need for new administrative offices after the country joined the EU.
No ministries are going to move to the new offices but the complex will be multifunction so certain state administration institutions will be located there as will be business buildings, hotels, conference halls, apartments for diplomats, sports facilities, and entertainment venues.
The competition for architectural projects is open to international participants. Only five or six bidders will be allowed to the final.
The winner will be invited to prepare the final organization plan of the whole complex. The other projects placed 2nd to 6th will each be awarded BGN 100 000.
The government will hold different tenders to select the construction companies to execute the project once the design is ready.
