Sofia was the Bulgarian city with the smallest average housing area per resident in 2007, said the national statistical office. The capital offered on average 17 sq m of housing space per resident versus over 20 sq m nationwide.
The nationwide average is marginally higher than last years 19.9 sq m per resident. Population centers in the greater Sofia area and in the Pernik area boast the highest average housing area per residential at over 27 sq m.
Residents in Vidin, Gabrovo, Kardjali, Kyustendil, Lovech and Montana inhabit 22 to 25 sq m on average.
Homes in Plovdiv, Ruse, Sliven, Pazardjik and Blagoevgrad are more cramped with average living space per resident of less than 18-19 sq m.
The biggest number of homes - at 1.25 mln, are two-room apartments, almost on par with three-room apartments at just below 1.2 mln. Close to 560,000 homes have four rooms while 123,000 homes have more than six rooms.
Some 20,000 new homes were added to the domestic residential stock in 2007 which now stands at 3.746 mln.
Sofia homes increased to 528,000 versus 525,000 a year ago.
