Natural and Artificial Lakes

Bulgaria has a relatively low number and small area of natural wetlands. Nevertheless, due to its key biogeographical position on the Balkan peninsula, in Europe and the Western Palearctic, it is characterized with an especially rich biodiversity. A significant part of it is concentrated in wetlands.

This invaluable natural resource - the water, is concentrated in the big rivers and artificial lakes. The biggest artificial lakes in Bulgaria are "Iskar", "Ogosta", "Devin". The Bulgarian natural lakes are an irresistible tourist attraction. There are many spas in Bulgaria.
The best known natural lakes are the Seven Rila Lakes (Rila Mountain). Others natural lakes:

  • Lake Ledenika - highest altitude 2,715 m (Rila)
  • Lake Okoto (The Eye) the deepest one - 39 m (Rila)
  • Lake Popovo, 480 m long, 336 m large (Pirin)
